Local pharmacies have always been an integral part of our health care system. Pharmacists provide critical advice about how to properly take prescription medication, potential side effects of medicine, and drug interactions. And, as we look for ways to reign in the high cost of prescription drugs, we need to encourage competition among pharmacies.

That is why I decided to cosponsor H.R. 971, the Community Pharmacy Fairness Act, which would allow independent pharmacists to negotiate terms and conditions of insurance contracts collectively. This bill will help level the playing field for community pharmacies so that they can better compete with the larger chains and make sure they remain a trusted part of our health care community.
