Increasing Border Patrol Agents

December 18, 2007

An estimated 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants have infiltrated the United States through our southern borders. This influx is straining our healthcare and education systems and Americans are witnessing more crime and an increased tax burden. While the Senate addressed illegal immigration by proposing amnesty, the House has insisted on strong border enforcement and additional security. This is the direction we need to go if we are going to turn the tide of illegal immigration and reverse this trend.

One of the many bills I have cosponsored which offers a comprehensive approach to border security and enforcement is the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act. This legislation increases border and interior security by increasing the number of border patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. It takes advantage of new surveillance technology along our borders and provides ICE with the resources and infrastructure needed to expedite the removal of illegal aliens. The SAVE Act would also improve information sharing among federal agencies and make it mandatory for employers to verify workers' eligibility.

Americans want our borders secured and immigration laws enforced. We must continue to welcome those who are willing to work hard to achieve the American dream, but they must do so legally and be willing to pull the wagon with the rest of America instead of just riding in it.
