Making Health Care Affordable for Self Employed

November 9, 2007

Without question our health care system is in a crisis and people are rightly demanding solutions.  The cost of medical insurance continues to rise and the struggle to pay for quality health care is becoming more difficult for everyone. There are currently around 47 million Americans that are living without insurance.

That’s why I am co-sponsoring the Equity for Our Nation’s Self-Employed Act. This bill would level the playing field between corporations and the self-employed when it comes to paying for health insurance benefits. This bill would eliminate the 15.3 percent FICA tax on their health care premiums for the self-employed, treating it like a business expense. We need to do all we can to make it easier for folks who do not have health insurance through their employer to afford healthcare.

America is blessed with the best health care system in the world.  However, we must keep working to make it available and affordable for everyone. I will continue to support changes to our health care system that will give people incentives to stay healthy as well as the ability to obtain affordable health insurance.
