Farm Bill Lacks Needed Reform

June 9, 2008

The federal government has been overly involved in the agriculture industry for too long.  When the farm bill was last extended in 2002, it brought federal taxpayer support to farm programs to a historic $80.1 billion. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, net farm income is forecast to be $92.3 billion this year, a $36.6 billion increase from 2007.  It is time to let these subsidies expire.

When the 2008 extension of the farm bill came to the House floor for a vote, it lacked sufficient reform of subsidies and price supports.  It allows farmers making up to $2.5 million to continue collecting subsidies and extends price supports to folks growing corn to make ethanol.  As the price of corn continues to rise for American consumers, we need to reduce subsidies not extend them.  From sugar to ethanol, the farm programs benefit a few at the expense of many.

While the President vetoed this irresponsible bill, the House voted to override his veto 316-108.
