Ceasefire needed in Middle East

January 15, 2009

Israel has every right to defend its citizens from attacks by Hamas militants. But, working toward a ceasefire agreement is in the best interests of both nations to prevent more bloodshed, especially of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. On January 9, I voted for H.Res. 34 to reaffirm my support for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Continued diplomatic pressure on both nations from the international community is critical to ending the fighting and relieving the growing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Israel has allowed aid groups to provide supplies and care to Palestinians during a three hour window each day, but neither side is willing to take the first steps toward renewing a ceasefire agreement. I will continue supporting efforts to establish peace and security in the Middle East.
