Interning in my Office

Years ago I began my political career as an intern for Iowa Representative Neal Smith in the House of Representatives. The experience provided an invaluable firsthand education into how government operates. I’m looking for bright students who share this interest in public service to apply for internships in my office.

What do interns do?

An internship in my office is an excellent opportunity for a valuable and unique education about the federal legislative process. Interns assist the staff in the areas of legislation, press, and communications. Intern responsibilities include performing office duties, writing and researching current legislative issues, and acting as general project support to my staff.

Who can apply to be an intern?

The program is specifically designed for college undergraduates.

Where can I intern?

Part time and full time internships are available in my Washington, DC office and my five Iowa offices (Des Moines, Davenport, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Sioux City). Interns typically work during one of three seasons: spring internships last from January through May; summer internships from May to August; and fall internships from September to December.

How do I apply?

Students who are interested in becoming an intern in my office can apply online. Questions can be directed to the intern coordinator in my Washington, DC office at (202) 224-3254. The deadline for fall internship applications is July 25, 2008.
