Rallying Against the Tanker Contract on Capitol Hill

Last Thursday, I was joined by other Members of Congress, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), and the International
Senator Murray and Larry Marrell with SPEEA
Senator Murray and Larry Marrell, SPEEA NW Regional VP
Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) on Capitol Hill to denounce the Pentagon's short-sighted decision to give a $40 billion air tanker refueling contract to Airbus. At the rally, we discussed the Air Force's error in awarding the contract to a foreign-owned and subsidized company with an untested and less capable product than the Boeing KC-767. We also talked about the need to invest in America's workforce and aerospace defense industry here at home.

Last week, I also joined with a bi-partisan group of Senators to send a letter to President Bush that outlines our serious concern that the U.S. government has decided to award Airbus with this contract at a time when we also have a case against the European Union over the illegal subsidies it provides to Airbus. Our letter notes that awarding this contract to a company that is being given illegal subsidies hurts our efforts to level the playing field for U.S. companies around the world.
