CONGRESSMAN KINGSTON SECURES FUNDING FOR SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

Funds to go toward warehouse expansion

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today announced that Second Harvest Food Bank will receive $220,500 in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The funding, which Congressman Kingston secured in the appropriations process, will go toward the expansion of Second Harvest’s warehouse.

“We were able to secure this funding because of the great work being done by Frank Richards and the folks at Second Harvest Food Bank,” Congressman Kingston said.  “With Georgia’s unemployment rate at 7%, charitable organizations like the food bank play a bigger role than ever.  This funding will help them expand their operation to reach out to even more people in and around Lowndes County.”

Farmers now eligible for aid consideration

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today announced that farmers affected by this year’s drought may now be eligible for assistance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“This drought has hit hard and now farmers are eligible for much needed assistance,” said Congressman Kingston.  “While we’ve had a good deal of rain lately, the beginning of the year was very tough for a lot of us.  I encourage anyone eligible for these loans to contact their local FSA office for assistance”

Savannah goes green

At an event on River Street in Downtown Savannah yesterday, the city unveiled the nation’s first bio-diesel street car and several other new bio fuels own by the city.

The vehicles are fueled by bio-diesel created by a local company which collects used vegetable oil from restaurants on River Street and around Savannah.

MAP International ranked one of most efficient charities

This morning’s Brunswick News reports that Brunswick-based MAP International once again made Forbes‘ list of the most  efficient charities.

RELEASE: CONGRESSMAN KINGSTON ANNOUNCES NOMINEES TO UNITED STATES SERVICE ACADEMIES

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) announces that 16 students in the First Congressional District of Georgia have received nominations to United States service academies.  The students were interviewed for consideration into the Class of 2013 by Congressman Kingston’s Military Academy Board.   Interviews were conducted at the Inn at Blueberry Plantation in Alma on November 24, 2008.

Governor Perdue Announces OneGeorgia Grant Recipients

Congratulations to the Valdosta-Lowndes Industrial Authority, Douglas-Coffee County Industrial Authority, and the cities of Glenwood and Folkston who were announced as OneGeorgia grant recipients by Governor Sonny Perdue today.  From the governor’s announcement:

Governor Announces over $13.4 million in OneGeorgia Awards

Governor Sonny Perdue and members of the OneGeorgia Authority Board today visited North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega and approved grants and loans from the OneGeorgia Authority’s portfolio of financing programs including EDGE, SILF, Equity, AIRGeorgia, BRIDGE and ESB.

These awards will assist with a variety of economic development projects in rural Georgia aimed at creating jobs, stimulating new private investment, supporting the retention of existing jobs and enhancing regional competitiveness through capacity-building projects. These projects, along with their respective local leadership representatives, were recognized at the OneGeorgia board meeting.

Right Whales Spotted

The Savannah Morning News reports today that right wales have been spotted near Georgia.  From the article:

A survey team from the Wildlife Trust spotted a pair of adult females traveling south about seven miles off Charleston harbor on Nov. 23.

The next day they saw another adult female about six miles off the Savannah River. They also spotted the first mother/calf pair of the season, about seven miles off Hilton Head Island, said Dianna Schulte, who leads the South Carolina survey team for the Wildlife Trust.

With fewer than 400 believed to be living in the wild, we must do what we can to balance the need for human safety while protecting this endangered species.

RELEASE: KINGSTON ON INAUGURATION: DON’T HOLD OUT FOR TICKETS

Congressman’s office cannot accommodate all requests

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today urged First District residents not to wait on tickets from his office to make plans to attend President-Elect Barrack Obama’s inauguration.  The Congressman’s office has received more than 2,000 requests for tickets for an allotment of less than 200 with more requests coming in daily.

“If I could accommodate every request, I would,” Congressman Kingston said, “but too much emphasis has been put on these tickets.  The Inaugural ceremonies are free of charge – these tickets get folks just a few feet closer at most.  The Park Service is expecting 1.5 million people and there aren’t even tickets for a quarter of those people.”

Wreaths for Warriors Walk

GOING GREEN: Georgia-Georgia Tech to be powered by renewable energy

The University of Georgia will partner with Georgia Power this year to power the annual Georgia-Georgia Tech game completely with renewable energy - a first for Sanford Stadium.

Imperial resumes sugar refining

Just ten months after tragedy struck at Imperial, the plant is back to business and resumed refining sugar and will roll out its first truckloads today.  From the AP:

Imperial Sugar resumes refining sugar after blast

Imperial Sugar has resumed refining sugar in Georgia for the first time since a February explosion killed 14 people and workers celebrated Wednesday at the groundbreaking of a new 75,000-square-foot packaging plant to replace the one destroyed.

The refinery near Savannah, the second-largest in the U.S., had to sit idle for months as federal investigators worked to determine the cause of the explosion and workers removed debris and cleaned machinery clogged with hardened sugar.

An economic stimulus we can believe in

The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau released today its estimate of the economic impact of the SEC Championship and the Chikfila Bowl.
