The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is the federal agency that oversees homes owned by the government, and which ensures that tenants and renters are treated fairly under the law. HUD is headed by the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who oversees its mission to increase home ownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination through the Fair Housing Act.
