“Throughout the month of February, Americans come together to celebrate Black History Month.  This is a time to reflect on the numerous contributions African-Americans have made, and to be proud of the rich diversity of our nation.

 

“African-American history is filled with remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on our nation.   From Frederick Douglass to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and from Harriet Tubman to Maya Angelou, African-Americans have played a unique and crucial role in enriching our culture and our society.  Their impact on fields ranging from government and politics to the arts and sciences cannot be overstated.

 

“While February is dedicated to honoring black history, this is something that should be done year-round.  The lasting legacy of the civil rights movement and its leaders is now part of our everyday lives and must not be forgotten.  Diversity is one of our nation’s greatest strengths, and we must recommit ourselves to ensuring that equality is a reality for all Americans.”
