Majority Leader Hoyer’s Statement on Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor reported that the U.S. economy added a mere 18,000 jobs in December, and unemployment hit its highest point in two years:
“The anemic job growth in today’s Labor Department report for December is just further evidence that the Bush Administration’s economic program is failing the American people. Job growth in December was disappointing, coming nowhere close to the 150,000 jobs needed per month to keep pace with population growth. The news that unemployment has hit 5.0% - its highest point in two years – is unsettling and adds additional uncertainty to our economy.
“Democrats are very focused on the issues of economic security that the American people are correctly concerned about – stagnant incomes, the increasing number of uninsured, and the record number of foreclosures. While Americans are struggling with these difficult economic conditions, they’re being forced to pay skyrocketing costs for health care, college tuition, and gasoline. Democrats will continue to work this year to develop policy responses to alleviate the burdens on middle class taxpayers and restore the health of our economy.”
