Hoyer: Simon Wiesenthal Was a Soldier of Justice Whose Legacy Will Endure

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the passing of Simon Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivor who helped bring more than 1,000 Nazi war criminals to justice:

“Simon Wiesenthal will forever be remembered as a man absolutely committed to the memory of the 6 million men, women and children who were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust and his tireless, life-long efforts to bring war criminals to justice.

“Mr. Wiesenthal truly was a soldier of justice whose legacy will endure for generations.  As the survivor of five Nazi death camps, he understood better than anyone the unspeakable violence and terror that human beings are capable of inflicting upon one another.  And, he understood the imperative of ensuring that this world’s darkest hour would never be forgotten.

“Today, we pay tribute to a man of courage and conviction.  But the most fitting tribute that we can pay to the life and legacy of Simon Wiesenthal is to restate our own commitment to combat intolerance and anti-Semitism wherever they exist.”
