“Each year on World AIDS Day we have an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, as well as how much is left to be done.

 

“Last week, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization released encouraging statistics that revised earlier estimates of the number of people with HIV and new HIV infections.  These revised numbers, however, are still too high.  The organizations project that there are 33 million people across the world living with HIV/AIDS, and there are 2.5 million new HIV cases each year.  This is simply unacceptable, and we cannot let this continue.

 

“Tomorrow we will remember all those we have lost to this disease, and we will rededicate ourselves to finding a cure.  Until a cure is found, we must continue our efforts to stop the spread of HIV by supporting all prevention methods that have proven effective.  America must lead the fight against this global pandemic and move the world closer to a future free from AIDS.”
