Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Former Texas Governor Ann Richards

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the news that former Texas Governor Ann Richards died at her home in Austin, Texas, yesterday:

"Ann Richards' trademark wit and down-to-earth style made her a widely recognized American personality.  But it is her dedication to making government more representative of and responsive to all people - not just the most privileged few - that made her a respected and admired American trailblazer.  She was a great Texan, a great Democrat, and a great American, and there is no doubt that she will be sorely missed.

"I would like to extend my condolences to her family, and hope that they can find comfort in knowing that her legacy is one that will continue to inspire everyday citizens to get involved with politics and governing.  Ann prided herself on speaking up for those who did not have a voice, and that is why her words will remain with us for generations to come."
