Majority Leader Hoyer: This Administration’s Economic Performance Can Only Be Called “Dismal”

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Bush spoke at the Economic Club of New York:

“Over the last seven years, the Bush Administration has pursued the most reckless fiscal policies in American history, creating record deficits and spiraling debt that threatens our long-term national and economic security.  And now, with millions of American families struggling to make ends meet, the President seems focused only on one thing: making tax cuts that are skewed toward the wealthiest taxpayers in America permanent, even though those tax cuts to not expire until the end of 2010.  With household incomes down, poverty up, college costs exploding, the number of uninsured increasing by 7 million, and gas prices more than doubling, the President seems mostly concerned with solidifying his legacy for fiscal irresponsibility.  In sharp contrast, Democrats will continue to work to restore fiscal responsibility, to strengthen our economy through middle-class tax relief and strategic investments in education and infrastructure, and to protect our national security.”
