U.S. Congressman
Pete Sessions today released the following statement after the House voted in favor, 260-166, to release the second $350 billion installment for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP):
“I am disappointed that this Congress has chosen to aid and abet tax dollar mismanagement by allowing the second $350 billion installment of TARP funds.
Despite the fact that TARP was originally sold to Congress as a tool to buy up toxic securities, the Treasury Department has redirected the funds toward capital injection programs along with a variety of other ad hoc programs. Now having burned through the first $350 billion of TARP funds, Treasury has failed to give Congress and the taxpayer an explanation of how these tax dollars have been spent or how taxpayers will be reimbursed.
U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions today released the following statement regarding President Bush’s decision to commute the sentences of former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean:
“For years, Americans have witnessed Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean’s tragic prosecution and imprisonment as our nation’s judicial system chose to embrace the fabricated story of an illegal drug smuggler over the lives and liberty of dedicated Border Patrol agents. Thousands of concerned citizens have rallied for their release, and I have joined Members of Congress in pleading for their pardon through numerous letters to the President and congressional resolutions.
“Today marks the end of an injustice. While I believe that Ramos and Compean deserve a full presidential pardon, I am relieved and grateful that President Bush’s decision to commute Ramos and Compean’s sentences will secure their freedom from prison.
U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, a member of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement regarding Democrats’ House rules changes for the 111th Congress:
“Today, House Democrats once again placed politics over good public policy by instituting unilateral, undemocratic changes to House Rules.
“Under their Rules package for the 111th Congress, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democrat Majority colleagues have chosen to stifle the voice of Minority representation by limiting the ability to provide alternative legislative solutions – particularly for tax increase legislation. Along with the creation of additional “pay-as-you-go” loopholes, the Majority will effectively bar the Minority from removing proposed tax increases and subject alternative proposals to a different set of standards than the debated legislation.
Today, I joined Frost Bank representatives and Richardson city leaders to mark the grand opening of the Frost Bank financial center in Richardson, Texas. Located at 700 E Campbell Road and 75/Central Expressway, the new Frost Bank center will offer personal and commercial banking services in Richardson and in the surrounding communities.
As a Texas owned and operated business, Frost Bank has been a key player in the economic history of our state, championing economic development across our state and helping Texas families save and invest for the future.
All across our nation, neighbors, schools, religious congregations, and community groups have found meaningful ways to say “thank you” to our troops and their families during this season. I would like to share two resources that the Department of Defense has facilitated to help Americans support our troops and their families.
Today, our nation pauses to reflect with gratitude and honor for the sacrifice our veterans have made to defend liberty, preserve freedom and advance the common good. With untold stories of heroism and dedication to duty, men and women who have served in our military have prized country more than self, knowing that freedom isn’t free.
