Washington, Jan 22 -

The House Judiciary committee has reorganized its subcommittees for the 111th Congress and U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) has been appointed as the Ranking Member of the newly-formed Subcommittee on Courts and Competition Policy.  Congressman Coble has also been appointed to a second new Judiciary panel for the 111th Congress.  In addition, Rep. Coble announced today that he will retain the same three subcommittee assignments on the Transportation and Infrastructure committee.

In a major change with the new Congress, the Judiciary committee will handle intellectual property matters at the full committee level.  Previously, Rep. Coble, the second-most senior Judiciary Republican, has been both Chairman and Ranking Member of the former Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property.  Now, he will be the top Republican on the subcommittee that will have jurisdiction over the nation’s federal courts, along with legislation that deals with antitrust matters and pending mergers that require congressional review.  In addition, Congressman Coble has been appointed to the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, a new assignment for this Congress.

“I will still be deeply involved in the area of intellectual property law,” Rep. Coble noted, “only now it will be done at the full committee level.  Copyright and patent reform will continue to consume a large amount of my time, but I am also looking forward to dealing with new issues such as antitrust and bankruptcy with my new subcommittee assignments.”

Congressman Coble said he has been reappointed to the same three Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittees.  As the third-most senior Republican on Transportation, Rep. Coble will serve on the Subcommittees on Highways and Transit, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, and Aviation.   “These subcommittee assignments will be high profile in the 111th Congress,” Rep. Coble noted.  “With all of the discussion concerning the need for infrastructure investment, plans to reauthorize new highway and aviation bills, along with the Coast Guard’s ongoing role in homeland security and drug interdiction, I suspect that I will be devoting a lot of my energies to these matters during the next two years.”
