Washington, Jan 6 - The Saugatuck Township Fire District has received a $154,138 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to replace the cab and chassis on its 1979 heavy rescue truck.

“The current economy is creating an obstacle to purchasing the equipment necessary to maintain the safety of local residents,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “The Department of Homeland Security grant will support a much-needed enhancement to the reliability of local fire responders without stressing local resources.”

The grant marks the third that the Saugatuck Township Fire District has received over the past several years, according to Fire Chief John Blok.

“The new equipment will enable the Saugatuck Township Fire District to become more reliable and more effective,” Blok said. “We are committing to ensuring the maximum level of efficiency and responsiveness to local and neighboring communities, and the infusion of federal resources will help in that effort.”
