Vitter Applauds Groundbreaking on St. Bernard Redevelopment Project |

December 12, 2008 - Untitled Document
(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter today applauded the groundbreaking of construction on the St. Bernard redevelopment project in New Orleans. The redeveloped housing community will consist of approximately 1,300 units, of which 346 will be available for public housing. “This new St. Bernard housing community represents a significant and positive change from the failed, old-style housing projects of the past,” said Vitter. “This new community will offer residents a mix of rental and owned properties and will include an off-site phase that will help deter the risk of concentrating poverty and isolating lower-income families.” Total development expenditures for the first phase of this project are $138 million, with funding coming from a mixture of grants and loans with an additional $74 million in tax credits. The first phase of the project will include 466 rental units, of which 157 units will be designated for public housing. “We need to leave the failed system of public housing behind, and the groundbreaking on this project puts us on a path to reach that goal. Last year, I voiced my opposition to the Landrieu-Waters-Dodd bill that would have simply rebuilt those projects that concentrated poverty and crime and trapped families in dangerous and substandard environments. This new St. Bernard development is an important step in the right direction,” Vitter said. |

When Congress passed an unprecedented $700 billion bailout of the financial sector, I warned that it would pave the way for future bailouts, and sadly, that prediction has proven true as the Big Three American car manufacturers are asking for a $25 billion bailout. No one wants these companies to fail, but it would be a grave mistake for the federal government to bailout these companies without fundamentally reforming their business models.
