Sen. Cornyn Statement on President Bush

Friday, January 16, 2009

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement regarding outgoing President George W. Bush:

“As President Bush makes his final departure from the White House, I want to thank him for his leadership and as he said in his farewell address—his willingness to make the tough decisions.

“In the days following September 11th, the nation witnessed the best of President Bush—his humanity and compassion, and his strength and resolve under pressure. He promised a hurting nation he would do everything in his power to prevent another terrorist attack. Today, more than 7 years later, he has fulfilled that promise and our country has been kept safe.

“I believe history will tell of a principled leader whose strong faith in God, family, and the power of freedom guided his time in office. President Bush is a man of character who possesses a deep love for his country.

“My family and I extend a warm welcome to the President and Laura as they return home to Texas.”

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
