Sen. Cornyn Advances Texas Priorities with Trade Representative Nominee Ron Kirk

“I welcomed the opportunity to meet today with Ron Kirk, President-elect Obama’s nominee for U.S. Trade Representative. We had a productive discussion, and as with all of the new Cabinet nominees, my chief concern is ensuring they understand and are fully aware of Texas’ priorities. Ron is a Texan and he understands that robust manufacturing and exports have kept Texas well-positioned in this slowing economy. I’m hopeful he will keep those on the forefront in his new role,” Sen. Cornyn said. “Texas is a national leader in trade, and exports provide thousands of jobs for Texans and billions in revenue for our state’s economy. I hope Ron will embrace policies that further Texas’ successful trade model, such as passage of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, which will lower foreign barriers on our goods and help our producers reach new markets.”
Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
