Washington, Jan 25 -

“President Obama listed temporarily eliminating the tax on unemployment benefits as a key way to provide immediate relief to struggling families.  I agree 100%.  As we work to find ways to kick start the economy, I propose that we don’t kick folks when they’re down and that we stop the tax on unemployment insurance benefits for 2008 and 2009.  It’s too bad that the Congressional Democrats didn’t agree with President Obama.  Hopefully, next week when Republicans meet with the new President we can get him to help us put this into the stimulus plan before it goes to the House for a vote.

“The 1099 statements that are showing up in mail boxes tell my constituents that they are going to owe federal taxes on their unemployment.  I’d like to be able to tell my constituents that we’re going to do something about this problem.  It’s the right thing to do.”
