Hernando County is home to more than 136,000 residents and is also home to the famous Weeki Wachee Preserve where mermaids and water shows have entertained visitors for over 100 years.
Brooksville, the county seat and Congresswoman Brown-Waite’s hometown, is Hernando County’s largest city.
With an average January temperature of 60 degrees and a much warmer summer, year-round outdoor recreation is always available in Hernando County. Hunting, fishing, camping, paddling, birding, and hiking are just a few of the many recreational opportunities enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
As part of the Nature Coast, vast tracts of public land have been preserved in Hernando County. These include the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Chinsegut Hill National Wildlife Refuge, Withlacoochee State Forest, Weeki Wachee Preserve, and the PK Ranch.
