Cornyn Meets With Treasury Secretary Nominee Geithner; Discusses Economy, TARP Funding

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, today met with President elect-Obama’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, and released the following statement:

“With the current instability in our nation’s economy, I appreciated having the opportunity to meet with Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy Geithner to discuss one issue on everyone’s mind – the economy. Getting our nation’s economy back on the right track is my top priority, and I look forward to working with leaders from both parties in a bipartisan way to do just that.

“I expressed to Mr. Geithner my concern with the lack of transparency and accountability employed with the first half of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). After a productive meeting, and many conversations with constituents and experts, I have decided to co-sponsor the resolution of disapproval for the release of the second half of the TARP funds. My meeting with Mr. Geithner did not provide any assurance that measures will be taken to ensure American taxpayers will be able to see how their hard-earned money is being spent.

“Additionally, I am troubled by recent reports that Mr. Geithner employed an illegal immigrant and failed to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes on more than one occasion. These are serious accusations and I am hopeful that Mr. Geithner will take the opportunity to provide an explanation when he appears before the Finance Committee for his confirmation hearing.”

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
