Sen. Cornyn Statement On Border Patrol Agents Ramos And Compean
Monday, January 19, 2009
WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, made the following statement following President Bush’s commutation of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
“I am extremely pleased the President answered my plea, and that of like-minded colleagues and millions of Texans and Americans, in commuting the sentences of Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean. These individuals have already paid the consequences of their actions and beyond. Having been convicted of charges now second-guessed by even the presiding prosecutor, this case cried out for a commutation and the President has now acted to right the wrongs of their excessive and unjust sentences.
“Over the past several weeks, I have made the case for commutation in private discussions with senior White House officials. This action followed years of public pleas, including several letters to the President, for justice. I look forward to the day that Ramos and Compean are released and reunited with their families.”
