AKAKA COMMENTS ON VA SECRETARY NOMINEE DR. JAMES PEAKE

Chairman pledges fair, expeditious consideration of nominee

October 30, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today on President George W. Bush's nomination of Dr. James Peake to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs:

"I am pleased that President Bush has selected a nominee to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  This leadership position is critical to our government's ability to honor the veterans of this great nation and the current vacancy is not acceptable.

"Dr. Peake is a highly decorated veteran with a long history of distinguished service and I look forward to learning more about him and his plans for the Department of Veterans Affairs, should he be confirmed.

"The Veterans' Affairs Committee will address Dr. Peake's nomination as expeditiously as possible, consistent with our obligation to give all nominations to advice and consent positions in VA full, fair and focused consideration."
