This request would continue previously funded research into ruggedized Direct Methanol Fuel Cells for use in laptop computers for the military.  This technology will allow for extended run-times for military notebook / laptop batteries.

The following projects were jointly supported by Senators Martinez and Nelson and are included in the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act,

2009.  This legislation includes the Fiscal Year 2009 Military Construction and Veterans’ Affairs Appropriations Act.  Except where noted, all projects are also included in the President’s FY 2009 budget request (amounts given are those in the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act):

Mayport – Alpha Warf Improvements – $14.9 million

Tampa – Joint Communications Squadron Facility – $29 million


Air Force:

Eglin – F-35 Student Dormitory (144 Rooms) – $19 million

Macdill – Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) Headquarters and Commandant Facility – $21 million

Cape Canaveral Air Station – Satellite Operations Support Facility – $8 million (not included in the President’s budget request)

Jacksonville – Replace Fuel Storage Tanks – $34 million (not included in the President’s Budget)

            Special Operations Command (SOCOM):

Eglin – Special Operations Forces Battalion Operations Complex (Global Defense Posture) – $40 million

Hurlburt Field – Special Operations Forces Special Tactics Group Facility – $8.9 million

Macdill – Special Operations Forces Add / Alter 501B (Headquarters, SOCOM) – $10.5 million
