SEN. MARTINEZ: “TALLAHASSEE RESIDENTS, CLAIM YOUR ECONOMIC STIMULUS PAYMENT”

Senator hosts event to help those who’ve yet to receive or claim their Economic Stimulus Payment

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today announced another Economic Stimulus Payment (ESP) event in coordination with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the City of Tallahassee to help people claim their stimulus payment if they’ve not done so already. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be held at Smith-Williams Neighborhood Service Center in Tallahassee on Thursday, October 2nd. The deadline to claim payments is October 15, 2008.

“Members of my staff and the IRS will be on hand to help residents claim stimulus checks that became available earlier this year. Many hardworking Floridians in the Tallahassee area have yet to claim their checks and we want to ensure they receive what’s rightfully theirs,” Martinez said. “Thousands of people across Florida have yet to claim their payment. At one event, a Florida family found out their family expects to receive $1,100 back from the IRS.”

Millions of retirees, disabled veterans, and low-wage earners who usually are exempt from filing a tax return needed to file a special form earlier this year in order to receive a stimulus payment. According to the IRS, approximately 379,000 taxpayers in Florida who are eligible for the Economic Stimulus Payment benefit have yet to file. During this event, representatives from the IRS and their partner agencies, the United Way of the Big Bend's BEST Project and Legal Services of North Florida, will be available to assist constituents with filing for their Economic Stimulus Payment benefit and other financial issues.
