HOLT STATEMENT ON OVERRIDE OF BUSH VETO OF MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT BILL

(Washington, DC) – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) yesterday helped override President Bush’s veto of legislation that would prevent a 10.6 percent cut in Medicare fees for doctors. The House voted 383 to 41 and the Senate voted 70 to 26 to override the veto. Holt issued the following statement in support of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act. More information about the legislation can be found here.

“When it comes to Medicare, our first rule should be to do no harm.

“I have heard from many Central New Jersey physicians who are rightly concerned about payment cuts and seniors who are understandably worried about a reduction in services. Medicare is a successful and effective program, and it has become a sacred trust between the government and our nation’s retirees.  In overriding the President’s veto, we have protected this important program and the services on which seniors rely. I hope Congress next will secure a long-term solution that ensures proper reimbursement for physicians and access to needed services for Medicare beneficiaries, and then we should reform the section of the law, Medicare Part D, that provides prescription medicine.

Additionally, I am pleased this bill finally will lead to mental health parity for seniors who access Medicare mental health services.”
