International Affairs

Perhaps at no other time in the history of our great nation has the direction of the United States' global leadership been so questioned or so challenged. The world has always looked to us for guidance on matters pertaining to upholding the rule of law, strengthening democratic institutions, human rights and security.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I have participated in comprehensive oversight hearings focusing on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the overall war against terror. My priority issues also have included the ongoing peace prospects in the Middle East, elections in emerging democracies and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.

As the Co-Chair of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), I have the opportunity to play a prominent role in promoting human rights and protection of minority populations. The U.S. Helsinki Commission is a leading multilateral organizations focused on the enforcement of conventions designed to protect human rights and individual freedoms.

I also...

  • Support a new direction and new priorities in Iraq. The American public has been asking for it and Congress has a responsibility to act. Our troops deserve a new mission that removes them from the midst of a civil war and hastens their return home safely and honorably;

  • Support initiatives for peace in the Middle East; we need to expand the dialogue to include the Gulf States. Any agreement must protect Israel's right to exist, the security of its citizens and an end to terror attacks;

  • Co-sponsor of Sudan Accountability Act that allows state and local governments to divest from companies doing business with government of Sudan. Support reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, and

  • Support an enforceable free and fair trade policy that raises human rights, environmental and labor standards around the world, and ensures American workers can compete on a level playing field.
