Washington, DC ---- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation, is pleased with today’s vote to extend the State Children’s Insurance Program (SCHIP) for an 18 month period until March 31, 2009. Ros-Lehtinen issued the following statement after voting “yes” on the Floor of the House.  The final vote tally was 411 to 3.

“I am pleased that the House has approved this 18 month extension. I am a co-sponsor of previous extensions because I believe we would be abdicating our responsibilities if this Congress adjourned without approving it.

I have had a longstanding record of promoting children’s issues across my home state of Florida, from getting millions of dollars for Miami Children’s Hospital to assuring that Head Start continues its important work with our very young.

I will continue to work in a bipartisan way to craft a bill that will provide benefits to those low income, uninsured children who depend on the program for their healthcare but we must not let ourselves be blinded into thinking that the federal government has the solutions to all our ills.”
