Feingold Outlines Legislative Priorities at Local Listening Sessions

Senator Says Combating Terrorism Is Top Priority

April 22, 2002

Beaver Dam, WI - U.S. Senator Russ Feingold today outlined his legislative priorities at local Listening Sessions in Dodge and Washington counties. Feingold’s priorities include combating terrorism, enforcing fiscal responsibility in Congress and addressing the concerns of Wisconsin’s families.

"My top priority is the fight against terrorism. In the wake of the terrible events of September 11th, we must do everything we can to combat the terrorist threat, while still respecting our Constitution’s processes," Feingold said.

As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on Africa, Feingold is working to address the danger posed by war-torn African nations that may serve as havens for terrorist activity. As Subcommittee Chairman, he is working to develop policies to help bring stability to African nations and make them less vulnerable to criminal activities.

Feingold also discussed his efforts to address other important priorities, such as enforcing fiscal responsibility in Congress and addressing the Wisconsin families’ health care costs. He discussed his bipartisan effort to reinstate congressional budget caps that help to curb wasteful spending and reduce the deficit, and his proposal to get Wisconsin seniors their fair share of Medicare dollars.

"I am committed to addressing the needs of Wisconsin’s families, and working on issues that reflect Wisconsin’s values," Feingold said. "I have always looked to Wisconsin’s values to guide my priorities in the U.S. Senate, from our state’s tradition of clean and open government to its history of fiscal responsibility and respect for the public dollar. I will continue to use those principles to guide my work in the Senate."

Feingold held his 27th Listening Session of 2002, and his 675th since he was first elected, at the Beaver Dam Community Library, starting 9:15 a.m. He held his 28th session of 2002, and 676th since he was first elected, at the Germantown Village Hall starting at 11:45 a.m. This is Feingold’s tenth year of holding Listening Sessions in every county.
