Federal Funds Save Baltimore's Steam Tug

By Ron Matz Reporting

Ron Matz reports some federal funds are coming our way to save one of America's treasures.

Built more than 100 years ago, the Steam Tug Baltimore remains the only operating coal-fired steam tugboat in the nation.

That's why Monday's press conference at the Baltimore Museum of Industry was so important.

The Baltimore has been awarded a $250,000 Save America's Treasures grant.

"This gets us started. It will get the most critical needs taken care of. We have to match it with private money. We've had some folks who have stepped up already to lead the fundraising effort," said Roland Woodward, executive director of the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

The Baltimore moved barges, carried city officials inspecting the harbor and even broke ice.

"This was an important part of keeping the commerce coming into the Port of Baltimore, so this is a great moment. Saving America's treasures is exactly what we're doing here at the Baltimore Museum of Industry," said Congressman Ben Cardin.

The Baltimore was once owned by Delaware's DuPont family. It sank in the Sassafras River in 1981 and then raised by Baltimore Museum of Industry volunteers.

As part of the grant, $250,000 in private matching funds will have to be raised. The Steam Tug Baltimore was declared a national historic landmark in 1993.
