It’s always a source of great amusement back home when someone asks me to offer my opinions on schools. The truth is, if you ranked my family for accomplishments in education, I’d probably finish fifth or sixth.

 

I come from a family of educators, starting with my great-grandmother, Catherine Murphy, who came to this country unable to read or write her own name. But shortly after arriving in a little town in Connecticut, she was elected to the school board – because Catherine Murphy understood that the future belonged to education.


1/08/07: Dodd, Ehlers Announce Legislation Establishing Voluntary Core Standards in Math and Science

Washington - On the fifth anniversary of the No Child Left Behind Act, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Representative Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) will unveil their bipartisan, bicameral legislation which would create rigorous, voluntary core standards for children in grades K-12 in math and science. The Standards to Provide Educational Achievement for Kids (SPEAK) Act will provide incentives for states to adopt these standards in an effort to ensure that all students, regardless of where they live, are taught to common, rigorous, education standards. Holding students to high standards will help to secure America’s competitive edge in the global marketplace.


10/04/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce more than $2.9 Million for High School Education Programs

WASHINGTON – Connecticut schools will receive a five-year grant of $2,976,074 from the Department of Education’s Smaller Learning Community Program (SLC), Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today.  The SLC grant supports the development of small, safe, and successful learning environments in large high schools.

9/22/06: Dodd, Lieberman Congratulate Three Blue Ribbon Schools

Washington, DC — Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded the prestigious 2006 Blue Ribbon Schools Award to three Connecticut schools. The Blue Ribbon award is vigorously sought by schools across the nation. Winners must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence; a strong sense of leadership; a clear vision and sense of mission; a high quality of teaching and challenging curriculum; and a strong show of family and community involvement in the school.

9/22/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce Funds for Foreign Language Assistance

WASHINGTON – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) announced today that the West Hartford Public School System will receive more than $200,000 over the course of three years under the Foreign Language Assistance Program - Local Education Agency (FLAP-LEA).  These grants are intended for study of less-commonly taught foreign languages.

8/01/06: Sen. Dodd Decries Military Equipment Shortfalls; Announces Legislation

Washington – Citing recent reports that up to two-thirds of the U.S. Army’s combat brigades are unprepared for wartime missions largely due to equipment shortfalls, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today said he would seek the funding required by the Army to address these serious concerns. Dodd said he and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) will propose to amend the Senate Defense Appropriations Bill to address the $17 billion shortfall in the President’s proposed budget identified by the Army’s top leaders to replace critical military equipment that has been worn out or lost in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

6/09/06: Dodd, Lieberman Announce over $1 Million To Aid Bridgeport Youth

WASHINGTON – Bridgeport’s public schools are set to receive more than $372,000 each year for the next three years, totaling over one million dollars in federal funds to improve and expand upon counseling services for Bridgeport youth, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The funds will come from a grant awarded by the Department of Education’s Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Demonstration Program.


5/24/06: Senator Dodd Welcomes National Geographic Bee Connecticut State Champion

May 23, 2006
Senator Dodd today met with Liam McCarthy, a 13-year-old 8th grader at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, who won the Connecticut State National Geographic Geography Bee. Liam also represented Connecticut at the 2005 National Geographic Bee.
