Martinez: Senate Approves St. Augustine Commemoration Commission

Washington

U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today announced that the Senate has approved the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission. The commission will be charged with organizing state and local activities in the year 2015 to commemorate the 450th anniversary of St. Augustine, the oldest European-established city in the U.S. The commission legislation, authored by Senator Martinez and introduced with Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), was included as part of S.22, the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act.

"The celebration of our nation's oldest city will be a national event," Martinez said. "This commission includes and involves local and state officials along with noted historians who will gather to successfully plan and execute programs and activities honoring St. Augustine's 450th anniversary. I commend my colleagues for recognizing the significance of St. Augustine's history and the importance of understanding our cultural heritage."

The commission, consisting of fourteen members, will plan, develop, and carry out programs and activities appropriate for the commemoration. In addition, it will work to encourage various organizations throughout the United States to organize and participate in anniversary activities to expand understanding and appreciation of the significance of the founding and continuing history of St. Augustine.

Congressman John Mica (R-Winter Park) is leading a similar effort in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Senate measure now moves to the House for further consideration.
