(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad and Congressman Earl Pomeroy applauded action Friday by the U.S. Department of the Interior that marks a major step forward in the effort to bring a safe, reliable supply of water to residents of northwestern North Dakota.

The Congressional delegation has been fighting for years to move the Northwest Area Water Supply (NAWS) project forward. Today, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne signed off on a “Record of Decision” that selects the water treatment method for the project.

“This is a big step forward for NAWS, and it’s great news for North Dakota,” the delegation said in a joint statement. “The federal government promised long ago to complete the NAWS project and ensure thousands of people in our state had access to a safe, reliable supply of water. That promise has taken too long to fulfill, and there are more hurdles ahead, but the Interior Department has now made a key decision that will allow us to move forward with this critical project.”
