(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) was once again selected Chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee (DPC) for the next session of Congress. The DPC is one of the Senate’s top leadership positions.

The DPC serves the Democratic Caucus by providing research and legislative support, publishing reports, conducting oversight investigations and holding hearings, developing new policy proposals and communications strategies, tracking roll call votes, and hosting weekly policy lunches and annual issues conferences.

“It is an honor to accept a leadership position once again in the 111th Congress,” Dorgan said. “I will use this position to develop policies that address the many challenges we face as a nation, and look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to make positive change a reality for working families in North Dakota and across the country.”

As DPC Chairman, Dorgan has held 18 hearings on contracting abuses and corruption in Iraq and Afghanistan, which have exposed hundreds of millions of dollars in waste and uncovered threats to the health and lives of American troops in Iraq from unsafe water and food, electrocution, and the deadly chemical sodium dichromate.

Dorgan has also created an in-house “new idea factory” at the DPC that works with a network of more than two hundred policy experts to produce innovative policy ideas for Senate Democrats.

In addition to his leadership position, Dorgan serves on the following Senate Committees: Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Energy and Water subcommittee on the Appropriations Committee, and a senior member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
