Alternate Transportation

Car Sharing

Through a partnership with Zipcar, Metro offers car sharing at select Metrorail stations and around the region at locations convenient to Metrobus. You can ride Metro and then pick up a car just steps from the train or bus to run errands, shop or reach any other business or social event not easily accessible via transit.

Car sharing is available in Metro Kiss & Ride lots at 39 of the 86 Metrorail stations (see station pages for locations) and many other neighborhood locations both near Metrorail stations without Kiss & Ride lots and elsewhere in the region.

Zipcar works on a membership basis. You pay an annual membership fee, then reserve and pick up a car when you need it. A range of vehicles are available for members to choose from, including compact cars, vans, pickup trucks, convertibles, and gas/electric hybrids. See the Zipcar site for further details.

Guaranteed Ride Home

Does either of these describe you?

  • "I have to drive to work so I can get home in an emergency."
  • "I never know until the last minute when I have to stay late. I don't want to be stuck."

Leave your car at home and worry no more. If you commute by transit, van pool, car pool, bike or even on foot, you have a free taxi home in an emergency if you're a member of the Guaranteed Ride Home program sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

For details, call 1-800-745-RIDE (7433).

Segways

Segways and other Automatic Balancing Wheeled Conveyances (ABWCs) are permitted aboard Metrorail. ABWCs are defined as battery-powered, non-collapsible, self-balancing wheeled transportation devices. Permitted ABWCs include but are not limited to the Segway brand.

People with disabilities who use a Segway as a mobility device are exempt from certain policy restrictions. To become a registered Metro ABWC user, you must be an ID card holder in one of Metro's disability related programs. In addition, a physician must certify that the Segway is used as a mobility device on the ABWC registration form PDF.

As a non-mobility device, riders must walk their ABWC inside Metrorail stations. ABWC as either a mobility or non-mobility device cannot be transported on the escalator. All ABWC users must use the elevators to enter or exit stations and the platform level.

ABWCs are allowed inside railcars:

  • from Monday through Friday at any time except 7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.
  • on the following holidays: Martin Luther King's Birthday observed, President's Day observed, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day observed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

ABWCs are not allowed in the Metrorail system on Inauguration Day, the Fourth of July, during major marches or during other special events. Unlike bicycles, Segways are not allowed on Metrobuses because they can't be stabilized on a bus lift and can't be secured safely inside a bus.

See the ABWC policy PDF for additional details.
