Homeland Security

As the September 11 attacks against our nation made clear, homeland security is an urgent need.

I have supported several measures aimed at strengthening our homeland security, including:

  • Authoring comprehensive port security legislation and working for increased port security funding.
  • Authoring and passing an airport security amendment requiring that all checked baggage without a corresponding passenger be removed from domestic flights.
  • Strongly supporting President Bush's creation of an Office of Homeland Security.
  • Strongly advocating fundamental immigration reform.
  • Fighting for fuding for state and local first responders.

Approaching Widening Bailouts with Caution

Untitled Document

When Congress passed an unprecedented $700 billion bailout of the financial sector, I warned that it would pave the way for future bailouts, and sadly, that prediction has proven true as the Big Three American car manufacturers are asking for a $25 billion bailout.  No one wants these companies to fail, but it would be a grave mistake for the federal government to bailout these companies without fundamentally reforming their business models.
