Lummis: More Bailouts Not the Way to Strengthen Economy

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., is supporting a resolution disapproving of Washington’s decision to spend the remaining half of the $700 billion in bailout funding.

“One of the greatest responsibilities I have as Wyoming’s Congressman is to protect taxpayers’ money,” Lummis said. “During the campaign, I opposed the bailout because it did not provide adequate protection for taxpayers and there was no responsible plan as to how the money would be spent.”

“The first round of bailout spending was an absolute disaster. Now Congress is being asked to approve a second $350 billion bailout on the premise that it will be better spent and accounted for this time around. I’m not convinced, and neither are the people of Wyoming. We cannot borrow and spend and bail our way back to a strong economy.”

“The way out of our economic difficulties begins by creating jobs and lowering the tax burden on working families.”

Lummis co-sponsored a resolution, H.J. Res. 3, that expresses the disapproval of the House to allow the Treasury to draw on another $350 billion of taxpayer money to help the nation’s banks and auto industry, as well as consumer and commercial real estate loans.
