Barrett Comments on 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Washington, DC -  Congressman J. Gresham Barrett (SC, 3) released the following statement in support of the March for Life occuring in Washington, DC today to mark the 36th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision known as Roe v. Wade:

"Today, Americans come together to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion.  No place more appropriate then here in Washington, DC surrounded by monuments dedicated to our Founding Fathers.  Individuals who understood to be a successful democracy we each had to accept and respect our God given rights.

" 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.'  Let me say that again – Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.  It is no accident that Life is mentioned first.  It is our most basic right – given to us by our Creator. 

"Every life is a gift given to us by the Grace of God.   And there can be no doubt that life begins at the moment of conception.  Psalm 139:13 'You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.'  How arrogant is man to interfere with God’s plan.

"I thank God for everyone who traveled to Washington, DC today.  And, I am reminded of my family and the joy my children have brought to my life and in some of the most unexpected ways.  But, my heart also breaks for the faces that are missing because they were never born.  And, I pray for all the men and women throughout our country and world who are expecting a child and believe they are in an impossible situation, that they would understand that with God all things are possible.  I pray they turn to a loved one, a friend, a religious leader for counseling.

"It is important that we continue to fight for the rights of the unborn.  I am thankful to all who made the journey today to give a voice to those who have not yet been born.  Keep up the fight and God Bless you."
