Dreier: We Need American-Made Energy Now

August 15, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) took to the floor of the House today to call for a vote on a comprehensive energy plan that will bring down the price of gas, reduce our dependency on foreign oil and create jobs here at home.  Dreier was participating in the historic protest led by House Republicans calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to cut short the traditional August recess and bring the House back to work.

“The House chamber is usually quiet during the month of August, but not this year,” Dreier said.  “House Republicans have been conducting a month-long town hall meeting on the need for a vote on an ‘all of the above’ energy policy that will bring relief to the American people.  What we’re asking for is simple - a vote.  In a democracy, we debate and we vote.  In the House of Representatives this year, solutions have been spurned and nothing has been done to help working families struggling with the high cost of gas.  If we can get a vote on the American Energy Act, we can change that.  Hopefully Speaker Pelosi will listen to the voices of the American people and bring us back for a vote on a real energy policy.”

Congressman Dreier is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 6566, the American Energy Act, a bill that provides an “All of the Above” energy strategy.  The bill would: eliminate red tape that restricts the construction of domestic refineries; promote renewable and alternative energy solutions like coal-to-liquid, wind, and solar; provide tax incentives to improve energy conservation and efficiency; and increase the supply of American-made energy in environmentally sound ways by opening up deep ocean resources and allow the development of our nation’s oil shale resources.
