Coffman Thanks Bush for Border Agents Clemency

Commends Tancredo for tireless work for their release

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colorado) today thanked outgoing President Bush for commuting the sentences of U.S. Border Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.

“President Bush made the right decision in commuting these sentences,” Coffman said. “These heroes can finally go home to their families instead of enduring the daily abuses of prison life.”

Ramos and Compean are serving 11 and 12 year sentences, respectively, for shooting an illegal alien and drug smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete Davila. Davila has since been apprehended again for smuggling drugs across the U.S. – Mexico border.

Coffman’s predecessor, former-Rep. Tom Tancredo, was an early supporter of a full pardon for the agents.

“I commend former Congressman Tom Tancredo who never lost hope and never quit working for their release. Without his determined efforts, this day may never have come,” concluded Coffman.
