Reid, Berkely Take Aerial Tour of Lake Mead

Helicopter tour focused on challenges facing the lake

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Shelley Berkley took an aerial tour of Lake Mead today. Joined by Lake Mead Superintendant Bill Dickinson, Reid and Berkley viewed the impact of the lake's declining water levels and discussed steps that need to be taken to protect the lake.

"Today's tour of Lake Mead confirmed much of what was discussed at yesterday's clean energy summit," Reid said. "While we know a long drought is the primary reason lake levels are low, I'm confident that global warming plays a significant role which is why we need to start taking steps now to address it."

"Lake Mead is more than just a source for the Valley's water; it's also a world class recreational center that offers residents and visitors year round outdoor fun and sun. But we also are seeing the impact of global warming on the Colorado River system which is affecting water levels in Lake Mead. The energy choices we make influence climate change and that is why we must look to solar, geothermal and other forms of clean energy to power Nevada's future. Whether it's energy or water use, increasing conservation and efficiency will help stretch our limited resources. That is why I continue to support incentives in Congress that will encourage families and businesses to become more energy efficient and to reduce water waste," said Congresswoman Berkley.

Reid and Berkley will work to secure more resources to study ways to remove invasive species such as the quagga mussel.
