United States Capitol Visitor Center Weekly Construction Summary Prepared by the Capitol Visitor Center Project Office, Architect of the Capitol, October 7, 2002

This Week - Ongoing Work - 10/7/02 through 10/11/02The majority of CVC related construction activity is now occurring within the construction fence and the site is secured by the U.S. Capitol Police. East Front Plaza Work (Inside the Construction Fence)- Earth-moving activities continue at several locations across the East Plaza.
- Excavation continues along the perimeter of the project footprint to clear the way for construction of guide walls. The guide walls will establish the channel in which specialized earth-moving equipment will excavate a trench for the CVC foundation walls.
House Side (Outside the Construction Fence)- Construction of the central planter located north of the South Barricade Entrance continues with grading and stone site work, until the middle of October, at which time the west side vehicle barrier and bollards will be installed. Upon completion of the barrier and bollards, stone work on and around the planter will start.
- Both sidewalks along SE drive have re-opened for pedestrian traffic.
- The South Door, the House Steps and the House Carriageway Door remain accessible to pedestrians throughout construction.
Senate Side (Outside the Construction Fence)- Preliminary CVC tunnel construction work will continue along the east side of New Jersey Avenue NW between Constitution Avenue and C Street. The east sidewalk in this location will continue to be closed. The street will continue to be restricted to one lane and one way traffic traveling southbound.The North Door, the Senate Steps and the Senate Carriageway Door remain accessible to pedestrians throughout construction.
Next Week - Anticipated Work - 10/14/02 through 10/18/02East Front Plaza Work (Inside the Construction Fence)- Site excavation will continue in locations throughout the East Plaza.
- Installation of guide-walls along the perimeter of the project footprint will continue.
House Side (Outside the Construction Fence)- Perimeter security work along First Street is expected to be completed. The sidewalks along the west side of First Street (opposite the Library of Congress) and the north side of Southeast Drive are available.
Senate Side (Outside the Construction Fence)- Work will continue along New Jersey Avenue NW for construction of the CVC service tunnel. The sidewalk and street restrictions identified above will continue.
