Most Frequently Asked Questions About Foreclosures: I am deeply concerned about the effects that widespread foreclosures have had on Nevadans and the national economy. I have worked hard to keep this problem from growing as it has. In 2007 my colleagues and I allocated up to $50 million for housing counseling in the FY 2008 appropriations bill. During summer of 2008, I was pleased that Congress worked in a bipartisan fashion to pass the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-289), which provides additional pre-foreclosure counseling and improves disclosure within the mortgage process. For our dedicated military families, this bill extends the moratorium on foreclosure proceedings from three to nine months and provides one year of relief from increases in mortgage-interest rates from the date of a service member’s return from duty. The housing bill also authorized the HOPE for Homeowners (H4H) program to help distressed homeowners refinance into a mortgage they can afford. Most recently, Congress passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. This measure expanded the eligibility requirements for the H4H program. The housing crisis is at the core of the financial crisis and I remain committed to working on ways to stabilize the housing market and bring relief to deserving families.
