EAST HARTFORD — Sen. Chris Dodd, accompanied by Rep. John Larson and a panel of health care experts, held a town-hall style forum today at Goodwin College’s beautiful new riverside campus in East Hartford. The forum was the first of several planned events on Dodd’s health care "listening tour," which is an attempt to gauge public opinion and need before Congress and the administration undertake a major health care initiative.

On the eve of the Inauguration, Representative Jim Himes and myself had the privilege of meeting with members of the Trumbull High School Marching Band. We wished them luck and congratulated them for receiving the honor of representing Connecticut in the Inaugural Parade.

My family and I spent our morning assembling care packages for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms. I would like to thank Serve DC and Operation Gratitude for providing us with one way to give back.

Remarks as Prepared: This morning, we meet to consider five distinguished individuals who President-elect Obama has designated for nomination to the Securities and Exchange Commission, to the Federal Reserve and to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers – positions critical to restoring confidence in our financial system and to stabilizing our underlying economy. I want to thank each nominee for appearing before this Committee today.

I was honored today to be one of the first to receive the Global Action for Children’s Champion Award.  We all get into public service or become deeply enmeshed in policy issues such as global health for the same reason: To make a difference. And is it ever needed.  Every single day, 27,000 children die from preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea and complications during childbirth, many of which result from malnutrition.  Each year, some 4 million newborns die in the first 4 weeks of life. That’s not just a tragedy – it’s a catastrophe.  I hope you will take a minute and listen to my remarks on this issue and I urge you to do all you can to help children across the world.

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today delivered the following remarks at the Global Action for Children’s first annual Children’s Champion Award Ceremony.  Dodd was honored for his leadership in passing “The Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008,” and for authoring “The Global Child Survival Act,” which would drastically reduce child and maternal mortality rates abroad.
