Clearwater County is located in the magnificent North Central region of Nez Perce Indians called this area home long before Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery across the county on their way to the Pacific Ocean. The Nez Perce fed the hungry travelers and helped them to construct canoes at Canoe Camp near mile marker 40 on U.S. Highway 12 (west of Orofino). In the late 1800s, miners and then loggers came to reap the rich bounty that the area has to offer. They stayed to build a home. Those who have come since enjoy a lifestyle based on wide open spaces, hard work and independence, but with a sense of community that brings neighbors together to help one another. Clearwater County was established February 27, 1911. Check back with us often as our web site information expands to give you a picture of our county and its people.
