HOUSE APPROVES LOCAL WATER PROJECTS

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the full House of Representatives has approved funding for projects in the 12th Congressional District as part of the final Energy and Water Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2004. The Senate is expected to approve the legislation in the near future.

"These projects will help protect our communities while restoring habitats and improving our infrastructure," said Costello. "I am pleased we have finished consideration of this important legislation."

The projects include:

· $2.3 million for continuation of construction to correct a design deficiency on the Chain of Rocks Canal.

· $850,000 for new sewer and storm water drain construction in St. Clair and Madison Counties.

· $850,000 to replace flood control structures in East St. Louis.

· $200,000 for habitat restoration around East St. Louis.

· $600,000 for the Mel Price Lock and Dam.

· $200,000 for work at the Wood River Levee, Madison County.

· $100,000 for construction of a pump station in the Grassy Lake area, Roxana/Hartford.

· $63 million for ongoing construction and maintenance at the Olmsted Lock and Dam.

· $2.2 million for operation and maintenance of the Kaskaskia Navigation System.

· $750,000 for maintenance of the Mound City Culvert, Pulaski County.

· $500,000 for maintenance of the Cairo Flood Wall, Alexander County.

· $103,000 to continue a study of sedimentation effects on habit on the Lower Cache River, Alexander and Pulaski Counties.
