Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to partner with the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to develop an inspection method for the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) nozzle. The objective of the proposed research is to develop the capability of thermographic nondestructive evaluation of SSME cold wall leaks using MSFC's ThermaCAM infrared camera system. The potential value of the grant is $30,000.
"Southern Illinois University is a leading research institution across a variety of subjects, and this grant is a further testament to this intellectual diversity," said Costello. "It is another example of how SIUC is fulfilling the vision laid out in the 'Southern at 150' plan."
